Understanding Allergy Immunotherapy: A Comprehensive Overview

Allergy immunotherapy, commonly referred to as allergy shots or sublingual tablets, is a medical treatment designed to reduce or eliminate allergic reactions by gradually desensitizing the immune system to specific allergens. Unlike standard treatments that mainly address symptoms, such as antihistamines or corticosteroids, immunotherapy aims to tackle the root cause of allergies, offering a long-term solution for individuals suffering from conditions like hay fever, allergic asthma, or insect venom allergies.

The treatment works by exposing the immune system to gradually increasing amounts of an allergen, either through injections under the skin or tablets placed under the tongue. Over time, this controlled exposure teaches the immune system to tolerate the allergen rather than overreacting, which is the hallmark of allergic responses. The process typically spans three to five years, with the frequency of administration decreasing as the immune response stabilizes.
